The most reliable range-of-motion tool here, and the easiest one to mistime
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, shortened to PNF, adds a contraction to a stretch. The practitioner takes the limb to end range, you push against that resistance for a few seconds, then you relax and the limb moves slightly further. Repeating that cycle produces more range in a single session than simply holding a position does, which is why the technique is worth having someone else administer.
Part of what changes is your tolerance to the stretch sensation rather than the physical length of the tissue. That is not a knock on the method. Stretch tolerance is a real, trainable property, and it is what determines the range you can actually access under load. It does mean gains fade if the work stops, which is why consistency does more here than intensity.
The catch is acute interference. Immediately after a PNF stretch the muscle produces less force for a period, which is useful to know and easy to get wrong. That effect is why the same technique can be an asset on the right day and a liability an hour before a maximal-effort session.
Keep it away from maximal-effort work. PNF immediately before a heavy or explosive session reduces output in that session, so the sensible slots are rest days, easy days, or several hours clear of hard training. The larger point is that range of motion behaves like a training adaptation rather than a session effect: it responds to repetition over weeks and it regresses when the work stops. One session produces a change you can measure that afternoon and very little that lasts. A standing weekly slot is what actually moves the number.

Assisted PNF stretching increases range of motion.
2018 systematic review, Physiotherapy Theory and Practice, 46 studies and 1,864 adults
The caveat: The same review rated the evidence low to very low quality across most comparisons and stated it could not conclude PNF is more or less effective than other stretching methods. The range gain is real; the claim this specific technique is uniquely best is not established.
PNF and static stretching produce larger long-term range-of-motion gains than ballistic or dynamic stretching.

The caveat: This compares stretching methods against each other. It is evidence that PNF is a good way to gain range, not evidence that gaining range improves athletic outcomes, which is a separate question the analysis did not answer.
PNF performed immediately before maximal-effort exercise reduces performance in that session.

The caveat: This is an acute, temporary effect, not a reason to avoid the technique. It is a scheduling constraint: the same stretch that costs you output before a heavy lift is unproblematic on a rest day.
Post-exercise stretching used alone as a recovery method does not meaningfully improve soreness, strength, or performance.

The caveat: Read this narrowly. It tests stretching as a standalone recovery intervention, which is not what the range-of-motion evidence supports it for. Stretching to feel less sore tomorrow is unsupported; stretching to move further in six weeks is a different claim.
