Timed pressure waves through the limbs, strongest where it matters two days out
The sleeve is divided into chambers. Air fills the chamber furthest from the body first, then the next one up, then the next, so pressure travels toward the torso in a wave rather than squeezing everywhere at once. Each cycle holds briefly, releases, and repeats. Over twenty to thirty minutes you accumulate a few dozen of these cycles.
The mechanical effect is straightforward: external pressure narrows the space fluid can sit in, and the directional sequence gives that fluid somewhere to go. Venous return and lymphatic drainage both run in the direction the wave travels. That part is not disputed. It is the same principle behind a compression sock, delivered harder and in a shorter block.
What the pressure does to how you feel afterward is less settled. Soreness is not purely a fluid problem, and studies that measure actual muscle output after compression mostly find nothing. So the honest description is a comfort and perceived-fatigue intervention with a modest evidence base, not a performance intervention.
Use it after hard work, not before it. The soreness benefit in the research clusters in the first 24 to 48 hours following a strenuous session, which makes the useful slot the evening of a hard day or the day after. There is no evidence-based reason to sit in boots ahead of a maximal effort. If you are stacking sessions, the compression block belongs in the gap between them. If your training week has one genuinely hard day, that is the day worth pairing it with.

Compression reduced muscle soreness after exercise, with the effect clearest around 48 hours.

The caveat: The benefit is not uniform across the recovery window. The same analysis found only a small, non-significant effect at 24 hours and a trivial one at 72 hours. The 48-hour result is the peak of an uneven curve, not a steady effect you can expect at any timepoint.
Effects on actual muscle function were trivial at every timepoint measured.

The caveat: This is a clean null result and it deserves to be stated plainly: compression is not a way to make your next session stronger. Feeling less sore and producing more force are different outcomes, and only the first has support here.
Pneumatic compression has not been shown to outperform a well-fitted static compression garment.

The caveat: This is under-studied rather than settled against the boots. A garment is cheaper and can be worn for hours; a pneumatic block delivers a stronger cyclic stimulus in a short window. Neither has beaten the other in the published record, so choose on practicality.
